Hebrews chapter thirteen is an exhortation to Jewish Christians to leave behind a covenant that was fulfilled and thus obsolete and “ready to vanish away” (Heb 8:13). This would be necessary in order for them to be identified with Jesus Christ. This text also indicates that they could not serve Christ and avoid persecutions. As Jesus took on a heavy burden and paid a high price to sanctify them and us (Heb 13:12; 2:9-11), we too can expect to pay a heavy price to be God’s sanctified people. The Christian must bear His reproach outside the camp before he can worship and serve God acceptably (Heb 13:13; 2 Tim 3:10-12).
