In Matthew 16:18, Jesus, in response to Peter’s confession of faith, promised to build His church. Although the church was established on the first Pentecost after the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and Peter played a leading role in that event (Acts 2:41-42, 47), he did not refer to the people of God by the term “church” in his epistles. He did however use several other terms to refer to the church (cf. 1 Pet 1:1-2), in fact he actually called them “the people of God” (1 Pet 2:9-10).

The Names Of God

No matter how hard people try, they cannot totally clear their minds of thoughts about God. Despite the efforts of scientists, educators, authors and governments, most people DO recognize an all-powerful and all-knowing Creator. The Christian emphatically affirms God’s eternal existence. We stand behind the Biblical record that He is “the living & true God” (1 Thess 1:9), and it is our great privilege to know Him not only through His creation, but also through divine revelation. One way for us to know God is by examining His names; the names He used to describe Himself. God revealed Himself by many names in the Scripture, and each name tells us something more about His nature.

The Bible A Book You Can Trust

How did God communicate His Word to man? This is a process the Bible describes as inspiration. Inspiration is not the same as the Bible being an inspiring book, which is true; it creates much interest, joy and enthusiasm. But more than that, the Bible is a book inspired BY God. In this lesson we will explore the facts requarding the divine inspiration of the Bible (2 Tim 3:16).

Burning Desire For God

Whatever a Christian may have to give-up in this life to serve the Lord will be more than made up for by what He wants to give us (Mark 10:29-30). If we will have a burning desire for God’s greater gifts, that will empower us to turn away from some very appealing offers in this world, which might lead us into sin. If you want the power to say “no” to sin or to anything or anyone that might interfere with you serving the Lord, then you’re going to have to have a burning desire for that which has the greatest value.

Deacons

Deacons were part of the organization of churches of Christ established by the apostles (Phil 1:1). They are to have certain qualities defined by the Holy Spirit (1 Tim 3:8-13), and with those qualities they have a vital work to perform. Deacons are models of servanthood for a community of servants. They are men we can imitate because they imitate the perfect Servant (Jesus Christ) Who told us that the highest calling in the kingdom of God is to serve others (Matt 20:26-28; 23:11; Mark 9:35).

Principles of Church Growth

The growth of the first century church was spectacular (Acts 2:41, 47; 4:4; 5:14; 6:1, 7). What brought about this tremendous growth? You might say that the circumstances were just right, and God knew that because He was fostering those circumstances. But just as important as that were the attitudes of those new children of God (Acts 9:31). And when you put the best circumstances together with the best attitudes then you have a winning combination that will succeed.

War In Heaven, Victory and Freedom on Earth

On Memorial Day we will give thanks to God as we reflect on the sacrifices made in times of war to secure and maintain our freedom as a nation. But today let us reflect on the greatest war, a war that secured our freedom from sin and its tragic consequence of separating us from God. That war took place in Heaven, and it did not occur before time began, nor will it occur at the end of time, but this war took place when Jesus died and arose from the grave.
