Deacons

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Deacons were part of the organization of churches of Christ established by the apostles (Phil 1:1). They are to have certain qualities defined by the Holy Spirit (1 Tim 3:8-13), and with those qualities they have a vital work to perform. Deacons are models of servanthood for a community of servants. They are men we can imitate because they imitate the perfect Servant (Jesus Christ) Who told us that the highest calling in the kingdom of God is to serve others (Matt 20:26-28; 23:11; Mark 9:35).

Qualifying A Congregation For Elders

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

If elders are going to function as the Lord would have them to, then they must be working within a congregation that is willing to cooperate with the nature of their work. What is the responsibility of a congregation to its elders (bishops, overseers, pastors)?

God’s dominant picture of kingdom leadership is the lowly shepherd. Therefore it is imperative that we spend some time trying to understand the attitudes and work of a Shepherd in order to understand the work of elders in a local church.

Government In The Lord’s Church

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

Let’s begin by pointing out what systems of government do not exist. First, she is not an “authoritarian” institution: characterized by demanding unquestioning obedience from her members, like a dictatorship. Secondly, she is not a “democracy”: a government by the members through elected officials. Third, she is not “totalitarian” in nature: imposing authority that exercises absolute and centralized control over all aspects of the lives of her members.
