Principles of Church Growth

Monday, June 7th, 2010

The growth of the first century church was spectacular (Acts 2:41, 47; 4:4; 5:14; 6:1, 7). What brought about this tremendous growth? You might say that the circumstances were just right, and God knew that because He was fostering those circumstances. But just as important as that were the attitudes of those new children of God (Acts 9:31). And when you put the best circumstances together with the best attitudes then you have a winning combination that will succeed.

Conversion Of The Samaritans

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

In Acts chapter eight we have a record of the first preaching of the gospel to those who were not fully Jews. Samaritans were a mixed race and held in utter contempt by most Jews (cf. Jn 4:9). The conversion of the Samaritans to Jesus Christ will teach us several great lessons.

Baptism Will Not Wash Away Some Things

Monday, February 25th, 2008

In Acts 22:16 Ananias explained the divine purpose of baptism - it is the method by which we call on the name of the Lord so that He will wash away our sins.

Jesus shed His blood on Calvary’s cross to redeem and to forgive us (1 Pet 1:19; Eph 1:7). True baptism is an act that connects us to the death of Christ where His blood was shed (Rom 6:4). Therefore, baptism has the power to wash away our sins. When we are baptized we must put our faith in the working of God who raised Jesus from the dead. At that point we go from a state of spiritual death to life with God having been forgiven of all our trespasses (Col 2:12-13).

This power of baptism is not in the water, but in the action God takes when we obey Him (remember Naaman the leper - 2 Kings 5).

But there are some things that God has NOT empowered baptism to wash away.

Attitudes Of Cornelius

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

One’s attitude is a powerful force, which God has granted to each one of us. We call it free moral agency. If the attitude is what it ought to be, then the word of God will do what it ought to do. In this lesson about Cornelius we will consider his attitudes or his disposition toward God and his fellow man.

Were The Apostles Just Men?

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Men, as in members of the human race, yes, but in other ways they were different from other disciples of Jesus Christ. Luke records that Jesus “called His disciples to Him; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles” (Lk 6:12-16). Some three years later He commissioned them to preach the saving gospel of Christ in all the earth (Matt 28:18-20). He empowered them with “the Promise of the Father…the Holy Spirit,” to fulfill that commission (Acts 1:4-8). Did the apostles speak, face to face, to every person on earth? No, but they brought the gospel to strategic locations throughout the world and taught others to carry it to the far reaches of the globe.
