It is easier to rejoice when everything is going well. There are few Christians who will “sing in the pain”, but we’re going to remember two who did (Acts 16).

Paul endured and suffered through a variety of perils in order to fulfill his commission as an apostle of Jesus Christ. Yet Paul’s command to the Thessalonian church applied equally to himself, “In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus.”

Leadership is important in every aspect of life: government, home, and the church. But not just anyone can be an effective leader - especially in the church. Leadership success in the secular realm does not assure equal success in the spiritual realm. The Word of God tells of men who were effective leaders, and from them we see the qualities required of every spiritual leader.

Hebrews chapter thirteen is an exhortation to Jewish Christians to leave behind a covenant that was fulfilled and thus obsolete and “ready to vanish away” (Heb 8:13). This would be necessary in order for them to be identified with Jesus Christ. This text also indicates that they could not serve Christ and avoid persecutions. As Jesus took on a heavy burden and paid a high price to sanctify them and us (Heb 13:12; 2:9-11), we too can expect to pay a heavy price to be God’s sanctified people. The Christian must bear His reproach outside the camp before he can worship and serve God acceptably (Heb 13:13; 2 Tim 3:10-12).

King David had some helpful things to say about overcoming his fear. His example, when followed, will enable us to face the challenges of this year without that overwhelming sense of fear.

Prayer is a true indicator of spiritual health. Many of us “know ourselves” only by comparing ourselves to others. But prayer reveals more about our spiritual condition before God than all our other activities combined.

Gethsemane (gheth-say-man-ay’) is a garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives. Gethsemane was a place where the produce of the Mount of Olives was prepared for use; thus it was the garden of the oil-press, olive-press. How fitting a name considering that in that garden Jesus was pressed by anxiety over His fate and concern for His disciples - “Gethsemane”, then, is a synonym for adversity. In this lesson we will discover how Jesus faced His adversity, and how we can best face our times of trial.
