Samson’s Riddle (Judges 14)

Many lessons can be gleaned from the Biblical record of Samson’s life. He was an impetuous man driven to act on emotions. One minute he could be gentle and affectionate toward a beautiful woman, and then the next minute he could cruel and heartless, as when he slew 1000 Philistine men with the jawbone of a donkey and then set their cornfields on fire. Chapter 14 in the book of Judges lays out several good life lessons for us demonstrated in one event in the life of Samson.

Paul’s Victorious Life

In the epistle of 2 Timothy, Paul was passing along some final instructions to the young evangelist. In the beautiful final paragraph Paul gave a summary of his life as a Christian. In Paul’s words, we find him looking in three directions just before his death.

“An Army Of One”

On the surface, this slogan of the U.S. Army seems to contradict its own description of itself. From the recruiting website we read, “The U.S. Army is made of committed Enlisted Soldiers…serving together to protect America’s freedoms and to preserve the peace. This kind of commitment makes each and every one of these Soldiers the embodiment of selfless service.” The slogan “An Army Of One” doesn’t incline us to think about “serving together”.
