It is easier to rejoice when everything is going well. There are few Christians who will “sing in the pain”, but we’re going to remember two who did (Acts 16).

More than likely we have all had periods of depression. Some of us are better at masking it than others. Regardless of how depression affects us, it can become a wall between us and our Father in Heaven. What must we do to overcome our bouts with depression?

This psalm of David is a poem of encouragement for those times when surrendering to evil seems the only path to choose. For us, it is a reminder that we must trust the Lord Jesus when it looks like the forces of evil will prevail.

Thus far we have addressed 2 questions. Why does God allow suffering? And what are the possible causes of it? In this lesson we will discuss how to prepare ourselves for times of suffering. The word “prepare” is the key word, because without preparation suffering will destroy our faith.

What are the causes of human suffering? It is God? Satan? Solomon said “time and chance” happens to everyone (natural causes; Ecc 9:11-12; 7:13-14). So it’s not wise to speculate on every cause of human suffering; we just can’t pinpoint the cause in every case. We simply need to realize there some things we CANNOT KNOW about this subject, but the things we CAN KNOW are found in God’s word (Deut 29:29).]

A Biblical study on human suffering can accomplish at least two results. First, it will provide us with the information we need to give a credible response - as to the reason for suffering - to skeptics of the Bible. Secondly, it will provide God’s people with the information we need to remain optimistic and hopeful in a suffering world, which gives us reason to rejoice in the Lord when and while we are suffering.

This may be one of the first and most important questions ever considered by man. The question has many answers. This lesson is the first in a series of four lessons. The first two deal specifically with the benefits gained by suffering, which are expressed within the pages of God’s word.

Gethsemane (gheth-say-man-ay’) is a garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives. Gethsemane was a place where the produce of the Mount of Olives was prepared for use; thus it was the garden of the oil-press, olive-press. How fitting a name considering that in that garden Jesus was pressed by anxiety over His fate and concern for His disciples - “Gethsemane”, then, is a synonym for adversity. In this lesson we will discover how Jesus faced His adversity, and how we can best face our times of trial.

This Psalm of David is literally fulfilled at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. But it also relates to many sufferings experienced by David. The gospels give a historical record of Jesus’ suffering; this psalm reveals His thoughts.
